Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 Movie Review

Hi everybody! Sorry that I miss my weekly blogging as I had deadlines to complete this week so I was pretty busy and hadn’t had time to gather my head for content. HOWEVER, I did make it a point to watch the Hunger Games epilogue this week and write about it.

Anyway, back to business! Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2! (What a mouthful to say the title isn’t it?)

I do like the poster design for the movie. It brings out the essence of the drive of the movie. The Mockingjay symbolises freedom and hope. A hope for a better world. I had to include the picture below because it was just too epic, the designers of this on the book and on the posters were amazing.

Right, back to the movie itself. Personally I thought the movie was just “Alright”. It wasn’t mind blowing, there weren’t enough action scenes, it was pretty draggy. Overall, I just wished they didn’t split the last book into 2 movies. There just wasn’t enough content to make it into 2 movies.

So the movie started off where it ended in Mockingjay Part 1, when Peeta had just been saved from being brainwashed by the Capitol. District 13 is all set on invading Capitol for a ‘free Panem’. However, District 13 and Katniss had a differ of views. To Katniss, she was full of vengeance and took everything on a personal level. District 13 leader, President Coin wanted to expand the rebel army but Katniss just wanted President Snow dead. No surprise Katniss still went away and did things her way, forcing Coin to tell everyone that Katniss is doing what she wants her to do. Which i thought says a lot about Coin’s Character.

I felt that despite Katniss’ character is a born rebel leader, she is almost always controlled by Coin. Whatever, Coin wanted the people of Panem to see, is almost all scripted. Like WHY would they bring the camera crew to follow Katniss to kill Snow. I am sure Snow’s death to the people doesn’t have to have full coverage, but it looks as though Coin wanted a mega hunger games but just with the Capitol. Sorry for spoiling that Snow is going to die, but I’m quite sure readers know that already. Basically, Part 1 of the movie was about saving Peeta, and Part 2 is about killing Snow. Thats about it! There was a twist in the end that book readers would have known it was going to happen. I particularly enjoyed the twist at the end as it showed a slight complexity of the movie.

I have to comment on the lack of character story on some characters in this movie. Characters like Finnick and Anne deserves a bit more love story and connection. Prim and Katniss’ connection didn’t get shown enough to get attached to the sisterly bond that the book portrayed. There was just that visible awkwardness between the 2 sisters. The type of awkwardness that both sisters have been through different situations and are unable to talk about it. It was a pity though. The sisterly bond was something I looked forward to in the movie. Gale and Katniss’ bond was portrayed a lot more in the first movie but wasn’t seen in this movie. There weren’t enough scenes that would make Katniss feel like she had a choice between the 2 guys. There was even one scene where Gale and Peeta had a conversation of who Katniss kissed better. Like talk about desperate attempt on getting the audience to feel their love for Katniss. It was just… embarrassing.

I totally wish I had more good things to say about the movie, but I really don’t. I can admit the casting for Hungers Games franchise was SPOT ON for the readers. As for the Hunger Game franchise as a whole, I love how they made the Games come alive. They really did the book justice. But I feel that the jist of the economy and corruption wasn’t really seen well in the movie. Anyway, lovely ending for a great saga.

Kway Teow Wet Recipe

“4 Orders of Kway Teow Wet, Seafood Only please”

So last weekend, my Malaysian Course mates and I decided to cook dinner together to satisfy our cravings for KWAY TEOW WET. Seafood style. So I decided to document our “experience” in cooking this dish for the first time. So below is our recipe of our meal! Enjoy!

Chefs of the night (from left): Sheryl, Alyssa, Evelyn, Aizat

This is a recipe for 1 serving. In the pictures, it would be for 4 servings! I referred to a few recipes online and so this is my version.

Ingredients for Kway Teow:
200g  Kway Teow (flat rice noodles/stick)
2 tbsp Dark Sweet Sauce
1 tbsp Dark Soy Sauce
1 tbsp Oyster Sauce
A handful of Bean Sprouts
Cooking Oil

Ingredients for Broth:
6 pcs or more Prawns, Shell removed
2 Eggs
1 tbsp Light Soy Sauce
2-3 cloves of Garlic
1 tbsp Cornstarch (may need more to adjust the consistency)
Choi Sum (normally 3-4 stalks)
A handful of Mixed seafood (optional for more flavour)
1 cube of Chicken Stock
100ml Boiled Water

Our ingredients for the night!

Steps: Fried Kway Teow
1. Loosen the Kway Teow by boiling it in water (Don’t over boil them! If you do, it would be too mushy and out of shape to fry).

2. Filter the Kway Teow, then fry it in high heat with oil, adding Dark Sweet Sauce as you go until evenly coated. Avoid overcooking it as they will become sticky and clumpy. Basically just fry/stir frequently until you get it a consistent colour. Stop stirring intermittently to get a nice char on your noodles.

3. Add the beansprouts and stir fry it along with the Kway Teow

Steps: Broth

  1. Heat the oil in a pot.
  2. Add the Garlic and stir fry it until fragrant.
  3. Saute the prawns and seafood with the garlic.
  4. After the prawns and seafood have sear, add in the boiled water and chicken stock, stir until chicken stock has melted into the broth.
  5. Bring sauce to boil and add the Choi Sum.
  6. Thicken the sauce with cornstarch and simmer for awhile until everything is cooked.
  7. Add in the eggs and lightly spread it to make an eggy broth!

This is us Multitasking

Dinner is SERVED!

Halloween Part 2!

Hi! So last week, I posted about my night out as Black Swan for my Halloween in Newcastle.

Then the next day (hungover-ly) took a flight to Bristol to be with my Boyfriend for Halloween! Just to get a taster of the Halloween in Bristol!

We were dressed as the famous “couple” in the Studio Ghibli world. Chihiro and No Face ghost from Spirited Away!!

Joy thought of this idea when picking his costume for halloween! We know it’s an anime and it probably doesn’t fit the “white people’s” Halloween tradition of ghosts, witches and zombies. BUT, for people who appreciates Hayao Miyazaki’s work of bringing the spirits and humans together, it TOTALLY fits the theme of the night.

For all who doesn’t know this movie, PLEASE watch it! It is definitely NOT a typical Anime and the music is beautiful as well.

I managed to get the Chihiro costume online for 23 pounds! I know it’s a tad bit expensive, but it is definitely going to be on my list of “worth it” purchases. Plus, it will be my last official halloween in the UK as a student. So i thought it was a good buy.

I got a small, and it fits me pretty well! You will see the picture of me in it below. Sadly I didn’t get a solo shot because Joy was in costume so it wasn’t very easy for him to manoeuvre himself.

For Joy’s costume, it was handmade!
He used a aluminium plate (the one used for bbq’s) as the base of the mask. He taped the mask to his cap (GENIUS), and wore the cap on backwards so that the mask would stay on his head. He then bought fabric cloth of around 4 meters and then sewed it up. He cut 2 holes for his hands to come out. So Voila! No face!

We were suppose to buy the gloves for his costume online, but it didn’t come on time! Sad face. So we had to make his gloves. I made a sucky glove. So he used the one he made himself. I am really bad at crafts. Joy on the other hand is amazing at it…..

The no face costume in the room creeps me out….

Anyway, we spend the night walking around the streets of Bristol in our costumes, and offering children chocolate coins. (I still can’t believe they would take chocolate from us!) Some people recognises us from the movie, but others would just think that Joy was a really creepy ghost. We got our pictures taken around the streets, which was fun. I walked around like a Japanese character, straight-back and small steps, while no-face walks behind me. It was pretty cool. I think the BEST and EPIC part of the night was when Joy was playing with a drunk guy through the window. Not only that, he PAID him 1 pound for his “entertainment”. We wouldn’t have taken his money if we knew he was giving it. But we only realised after he left! So it was really funny.

Anyway, the night was great! Experience of trick or treating during Halloween, Check! I would like to go Halloween in the US, because I have always watched on tv that they do Halloween pretty well :p

Halloween no face

Thats all for this week folks! See ya!

Halloween 2015 – Part 1

It’s my fourth year in the the greatest city in the UK in my eyes, Newcastle. The time has now come for one of my favourite occasion of the year! Halloween

So this year, I attempted to roam the streets as Black Swan or at least a version of it! I managed to get a dress off eBay for only 3 pounds! Which to be honest, is a BARGAIN! Plus, its quite a generic dress. It’s not a one-time use ballet dress that I would just use once!So it was a bargain!

I also had my make up done last minute by the creation of the one and only Warm!
You can check her out on her blog http://www.warming1up.com, or on her Youtube, https://www.youtube.com/user/warming1up! She’s an amazing make-up artist with the looks of an angel and mind you, she’s not some beauty bimbo as she has a first class degree in Chemical Engineering! So check her out!

So these are among her creations of the night:

Yes, me not smiling isn’t the best look. I admit it.

Anyway, Just some pictures of the night that I managed to take before floating into drunk world where imagery does not matter anymore….. It was a great night out with old and new friends! One of the most unforgettable nights I’ve had for Halloween in Newcastle!

PART 2 of Halloween will be coming out very soon! So Stay tuned!
